Business, Government, and Nonprofit (BiNG) TIG

Sonja Hodgson and Lance Larkin

Following the Business Topical Interest Group's Annual Meeting earlier this year, we return as the renamed Business, Nonprofit, & Government (BiNG) TIG with an increased focus on the role we can play across these professional sectors in a changing global landscape. Anthropologists are known for their penchant to study the world around them, but there are increasingly more social scientists practicing within business, non-profit, or government settings without the direct support of the academy.

Studying these sectors from an anthropological perspective, or working within them from that same perspective, offers insight into how our worlds are structured and reconfigured -- sometimes quite actively so. At a time of rising populism, global climate change, and attacks on civil rights, many organizations have addressed these concerns on both micro- and macro-scales. The Business, Nonprofit, and Government TIG offers a space to further explore the limitations and successes of approaches to struggling with humanity's most pressing issues.

This coming year, we intend to focus our sessions on two pressing issues: 1) Artificial Intelligence (AI)—its implementation, use, ethics, and considerations to changing research methodologies therein;  and 2) global climate destabilization. Although we are planning on emphasizing these topics, all business, nonprofit, and government focused presentations are welcome. If you are interested in learning more and contributing to the conversation, we invite you to keep a lookout for BiNG TIG sessions at SfAA 2024. We hope to see you in Santa Fe!
