2021 Publications of Three Co-edited Volumes

davis-floyd 2.jpgRobbie Davis-Floyd, Adjunct Professor, Rice University, Houston, and SfAA Fellow, is proud to announce the 2021 publications of three co-edited volumes:

  • Birthing Models on the Human Rights Frontier: Speaking Truth to Power, eds. Betty-Anne Daviss and Robbie Davis-Floyd. Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge.

  • Sustainable Birth in Disruptive Times, eds. Kim Gutschow, Robbie Davis-Floyd, and Betty-Anne Daviss.

  • Birthing Techno-Sapiens: Human-Technology Co-Evolution and the Future of Reproduction, ed. Robbie Davis-Floyd. Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge.

With co-editor Kim Gutschow, Robbie has lead-edited a 2021 Special Issue of Frontiers in Sociology entitled The Global Impacts of COVID-19 on Maternity Care Practices and Childbearing Experiences containing 17 articles from around the world on those topics. Robbie says that finding reviewers for all 17 articles and getting them to actually review those articles was like "herding cats"! Although these articles were published online at varying times, the entire Special Issue is available as an e-book, which can be accessed at: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/13930/the-global-impact-of-covid-19-on-maternity-care-practices-and-childbearing-experiences#articles

davis-floyd 3.pngRobbie's current work is focused on lead-editing a three-volume series, to be called The Anthropology of Obstetrics and Obstetricians: The Practice, Maintenance, and Reproduction of a Biomedical Profession; her co-editor, Ashish Premkumar, is both a perinatologist and a PhD candidate in medical anthropology. All three volumes will be forthcoming from Berghahn Books in 2023.

As to her applied work, Robbie has wordsmithed the merger of the International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative: 10 Steps to Optimal MotherBaby Maternity Services with the FIGO Guidelines to Mother-Baby Friendly Birthing Facilities to create the International Childbirth Initiative (ICI): 12 Steps to Safe and Respectful MotherBaby-Family Maternity Care, available at www.ICIinternationalchildbirth.org. The ICI has been translated into over 20 languages and is being implemented in multiple maternity care services around the world.

Robbie is available to teach Independent Study courses for university course credit and also offers live-in or online internships.

Finally, Robbie wishes to remind everyone that she is lead editor of the Routledge series Social Science Perspectives on Childbirth and Reproduction, and will welcome your Book Proposals (which Robbie can help you construct), which should be sent to davis-floyd@outlook.com.
