Position Description

The SJSU Anthropology Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied-Cultural Anthropology beginning in August 2022, subject to budgetary approval. Applicants must have completed a PhD in anthropology or a closely related field before the position begins. The position requires an applied-cultural anthropologist able to use anthropology to address "real-world" problems in and between organizations, communities, and networks, and to actively participate in interdisciplinary collaborations. The department is particularly interested in an applied-cultural anthropologist with expertise in one or more the following areas: design anthropology; infrastructures; climate and environment; business anthropology; social dimensions of technological systems; economic anthropology; human-computer interactions; and medical anthropology, health, and health equity. 

The Anthropology Department has gained national recognition for its innovative graduate and undergraduate programs, particularly its M.A. Program in Applied Anthropology. The department is committed to applying anthropology in an integrated, interdisciplinary way—by reconnecting the discipline’s subfields, making links with other SJSU departments through its Behavioral Science and Organizational Studies degree programs, launching a world-class graduate degree program in Applied Anthropology, and collaborating with organizations outside the University.

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in anthropology or closely related academic field 
  • Experience in using anthropological knowledge and skills to address real-world problems in and between organizations, communities, or networks
  • Ability to develop practice-oriented projects at local, regional, and global levels of organization that potentially involve students
  • Capacity to develop and teach a range of courses including general education, upper-division anthropology, and graduate courses 
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas: design anthropology; infrastructures; climate and environment; business anthropology; social dimensions of technological systems; economic anthropology; human-computer interactions; medical anthropology, health, health equity
  • A record of research productivity as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications or scholarly presentations
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and advising for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Ability to develop opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across different departments 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach courses appropriate undergraduate and graduate courses, including general education courses
  • Initiate local, regional, or global projects that potentially involve undergraduate or graduate students
  • Provide academic advising for undergraduate students in anthropology, behavioral science, and organizational studies
  • Supervise and advise graduate students in applied anthropology and participate fully as a member of the graduate faculty
  • Maintain an active research as manifested in publications, professional presentations, or creative activity in support of tenure and/or promotion
  • Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity—in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement
