The Ithaca College Department of Anthropology (located in Ithaca, NY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor position in applied cultural/medical anthropology effective August 16, 2020. The successful candidate’s research will focus on human health outcomes in underrepresented populations and be grounded in an ethnographic and mixed-methods approach.
This position involves: teaching undergraduate courses in medical anthropology appropriate to the candidate’s expertise and department’s needs, including introductory courses in cultural anthropology and a methods course; supervising undergraduate research/field experiences; conducting and publishing research; advising students; participating in service obligations; and contributing courses in the Integrated Core Curriculum (Ithaca College’s general education program).
The Department of Anthropology is engaged in the study of what it means to be human in evolutionary and cultural perspectives, drawing on the social and natural sciences, humanities, and the creative arts. We seek not just to understand what it means to be human, but to apply our knowledge for the betterment of humanity. Our curriculum includes cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, and applied anthropology. The department values diversity and inclusivity and its mission is: (1) to educate students about the development and diversity of the world’s cultures and biologies, past and present; (2) to teach students the basic theories and methods that underlie anthropological research; (3) to give students practical experience in the use of anthropological knowledge and methods through the pursuit of original ethnographic, archaeological, and/or biological anthropology research, with particular emphasis on applied research; (4) to expose students to contemporary human and cultural issues of significance to their lives and the lives of others; and (5) to impart important skills in critical thinking, writing, research, and analysis that will provide students with the tools to be effective citizens of the global community. The department strives to achieve this mission in the context of a personalized approach to education where faculty members provide small classes, hands-on experiential and cross-disciplinary learning opportunities, and varied possibilities for one-on-one interaction with students.
Position qualifications include the following: a PhD in Anthropology at time of appointment; a commitment to the creation of an inclusive educational experience; demonstrated teaching effectiveness; an active program of research that will involve undergraduates; and an enthusiasm for working effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and students. Preference is given to candidates who demonstrate interest in fostering collaborations within the regional community that include undergraduate research opportunities. Preference will also be given to candidates who value the intersections of the subdisciplines of anthropology and demonstrate this in their teaching and/or research and who examine life course development.
